THE KIWANIAN

Bulletin of the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club

September 3, 2003

STARTERS: Rick opened the 3,877th Kiwanis meeting.  The mixed (-up?) choir led the song, Brad Baker (yes, it really was Brad) led the pledge and Dr.Merle gave the blessing.

GUESTS: Howiee brought Phil Jacobson (potential new member) and Dano brought sister Suzanne and friend Kimmy who were visiting from Las Vegas, and he also brought Ivy.

BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES:  We sang for Brad's birthday on 9/28 cuz he only comes to meetings every few years.  We also sang for chef Dave Hegner's two year anniversary with Kiwanis.  Dave made a $100 contribution to celebrate.  Thanks, Dave!

DRINK DISPENSER/FINK: In Tony's absence, Prez-Elect Rick declared this a fine free day, but Whit tried to fine the speaker and Fink Joanne just asked for honesty (no one stepped forward).  Since we were fine-free, there were many cell phone calls, talking and other frivolous activities.  Brad Baker bought 2 raffle tickets for $100 since he expected to be fined at least that much today.  Thanks, Brad.  Great to see you at a meeting!

Christmas Trees have been ordered!  Be sure to reserve time on your calendar between Thanksgiving and Christmas to work the tree lot.  This is our major fundraiser and all hands are necessary. Try to plan to work at least one (four hour) shift a week!!

Cathy announced that we raised $3,131.25 operating the parking lot at Hermosa Valley School (costs of $19.75 were deducted).  All proceeds to the School.  Thanks Cathy for coming up with the idea and implementing it.  Thanks to all who worked the lot!

Terry reported that the Social last Saturday was a big success.  Great idea from Dallas and fun band, great planning and food from Terry, great barbecuing by Paul and Fred and Bob, etc.  Thanks to all who brought food.  A good time was had by all!!

PROGRAM: Greg introduced today's speaker, Walter Popov from the LA County Department of Beaches & Harbors.  They are caretakers of the coastline of LA County (except Long Beach & Santa Monica).  They provide beach maintenance, life guards (with Fire Dept.), operate concessions and parking.  They set the standard worldwide for maintenance.  There are about 75 miles of beach and they take care of 64 miles.  They do capital improvements like rest rooms, concession stands, etc. from statewide bond revenues.  Their marketing programs help defray maintenance costs and provide such things as lifeguard vehicles and clothing, safety signs, summer youth programs, concerts at Marina del Rey, etc.  They provide beach wheel chairs at many beaches and electric vehicle charging stations.  For more info see their website:  beaches.co.la.ca.us.
