STARTERS: Prez Rick Koenig opened the 3,885th HB Kiwanis meeting.  The Men's Choir led God Bless America, Sam led the pledge and Merle gave the blessing.

GUESTS: Sergeant-at-Arms Sam Abrams was responsible for many guests today.  Prez Rick brought friends Rick Borders and Monique Noriega, Judy Garland brought friend Pat Love, Deborah brought colleague Maria Mokay, and Circle K Prez Diana Diab also was visiting. It was good to see recently missing members Jane, Doug and Judy.

 

BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES:  Greg Ronkainen had a birthday on the 27th, but he wasn't here to be sung to  -- so he just got a chord, instead of an entire song.

 

DRINK DISPENSER/FINK/OTHER FINES:

We were running a bit late so everyone was fine free -- except for some who were fined early for unruly conduct.

 

GOSSIP:  Among the unruly, Greg called Bob a slumlord - I think there was a fine.

 

 

UPCOMING EVENTS-MARK YOUR CALENDARS:

·         10/30 - Halloween Howl - Clark Building - 6 to 8 PM - Builders Club taking pictures.

·         11/4 - ELECTION DAY - Be sure to vote!!  

·         11/6  - BOARD MEETING - Caterers Sam Abrams, Joe Diaz and Dallas Yost

·         11/17 - DCM at Lomita - We are Hosts! - Please bring items appropriate for raffle prizes.  Also, clothes and blankets for the homeless are being collected by the West High Key Club.  We will deliver what we collect at this meeting.  Bring stuff to our hall.

·         11/22 and 11/23 - TREE LOT SET UP - Everyone come! Yvonne brings great chili.

·         THANKSGIVING - CHRISTMAS TREE LOT OPENS -Keep time available on  your calendars to work a couple shifts per week from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

 

MISC OTHER: 

·         11/2 - Peter Zippi Fund Benefit - 11 to 4 - Coast Pet Clinic - (Pet Adoption Service)

HEALTH UPDATE:  Ann is continuing therapy for another 8 days.  Keep her in your thoughts!  We miss you, Ann!

 

MOSQUITOES IN LORETO:  Joe reminded members going to Loreto next month to take mosquito repellent.  They have invaded!

BUILDERS CLUB: Cathy thanked Judy Garland for helping with the Builders Club picture taking at the Middle School Halloween Carnival last week.

 

GUMBALL MONEY - Bob reported that $80 was extracted from the Gumball machine which will be contributed to the Blind Children's Center.

PROGRAM:  Speaker  Diana Dansford, poet, Secretary of the Rolling Hills Kiwanis Club and Division 19 Foundation Representative read some of her poems.  She has several publications of her poetry, part of the proceeds from which go to Kiwanis organizations.  Diane was suddenly widowed in 1997 when her husband Earl died in a volleyball game in Hermosa Beach.  She turned to poetry to help her cope.  One of her books of poems entitled "When You Find Yourself Alone" includes poems celebrating a positive attitude toward starting over.  If you are interested in purchasing any of her books, she can be reached at DianaHansford@msn.com or (310) 328-6045.

 

THANKS COAST SIGN:  Prez said we are in process of replacing our sign stolen from Valley Park - Coast Sign donated the meeting info part of the sign because we do good stuff for Hermosa.

HAPPY/SADS:  Bruce happy about his trip to Barstow (took 2 days to get back) - Found a rock called "leverite" - as in "leave it right there".  Cathy sad and mystified re mice in her house; Dallas sad re Hermosa Beach downsizing (Sam's leaving?); Terry happy re winning big pot last week - she's going to spend it wisely on cervezas in Mazatlan; Dick happy re speaking at Manhattan Beach Kiwanis last week, sad not enough attended to make an interclub; Jerry happy son Allan still safe in San Diego fire area; Sam happy re "three-fer" trip to Texas, a bar mitzvah, sister's anniversary, and memorial for his mom; Linda anxious re brother in Fillmore and friends in Big Bear;  Carol happy re going to Turks & Caicos for volleyball camp, for Sam doing the bulletin next week, anxious re friends home in Lake Arrowhead; Bob sad re missing Rick's coronation lunch; Judy happy to be here and her guest Pat; Anna happy re picture of past Men/Women of the Year; Pat happy re her niece who is a captain with the Forest Rangers and helping fight the fires; Greg happy re performing with band in Manhattan Beach on Halloween; Rick just happy.

CONGRATS MARIE:  Our own Marie Diaz was named Volunteer of the Year at the Chamber Lunch and received recognition for all her work at the Farmers Market.

RAFFLE: Nick had the winning ticket and took the daily money.  This guy understands finance (and is recently engaged).  Daily was $40, pot was $105 with 25 cards. FINK:  Next week is #398.
