PROGRAM: Program Chairman Pro Tem Sam Abrams introduced speaker Steve Burrell, Hermosa Beach City Manager. Steve has been City Manager for 10 years. He spoke about the City difficulties with the State taking away revenue sources. Taxes like the car tax and property taxes that once went to cities, now go to Sacramento and sometimes and to some extent some comes back to the cities. Hermosa's property tax base is about $2 billion. The League of Cities is proposing an initiative that before the state can take local taxes, it has to be put to a vote of the people. Hermosa will also be losing sales taxes generated by car dealers who will be leaving. Hotel revenues are our next biggest revenue source. |
