STARTERS: New Prez Rick Koenig opened the 3,881st HB Kiwanis meeting with the Flintstone gavel and pan (lost your bell already??).  We all sang God Bless America, Ex-Lt. Gov. Larry Madick led the pledge and Merle gave the blessing.

GUESTS: Welcome back Sergeant-at-Arms Ann Ullman!!  Cathy brought Builders Club Prez Olivia Terry and Secretary Raegan Allsbrook.  Larry brought Maggie and friend Charles Fowler.

BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES:  Only birthday was Jerry Compton (10/5) who was absent.

DRINK DISPENSER/FINK: Whit caught Joe & Cary and Steve Delk.  Fink Carol shook with all but the latecomers, but Carol paid.

GAVEL AUCTION:  Rick paid $30 to get his gavel back (no bell), but lost the gavel again before the meeting was over.

DIVISION PRESENTATION:  X-Lt.Gov. Madick presented X-Prez Tony with Distinguished Service Award and a gift for his services as president last year.

 

      

PLAQUES:  Tony presented President's Appreciation Awards to Howiee (Photographer/Webmaster), Carol (Bulletin) and Earl (Years as Secretary).

BADGES:  Jane Walker & Charlie Cheatam officially badged.                

PROGRAM: New Program Chairman Greg Wyatt introduced the speaker Rev. Bagavan Friend who was the moving force behind the Redondo Beach Memorial Day Parade.  Rev. Friend said events of 9/11 made him think the city needed a shot of patriotism.  He plans to do it again next year.  He spoke about how he wanted to be a Marine when he was a youngster, then got caught up in the anti-war/communism movement in the 60's and 70's.  He has spent the years since trying to "atone" for some of his ideas and actions at that time. Based on his experience with the communist/socialist cadres, he warned that the dragon is not dead.  It is alive and well in China as well as in the United States.  He said that communists agitate, want chaos, because that's how they get power.  He believes they are still actively recruiting young people in our schools. He suggested that maintaining the importance of family, friends, country and god (of whatever religion) in our lives is necessary and the antithesis of what communism teaches (e.g. children belong to the State, Religions must be kept out of sight)

HAPPY/SAD: Larry J. happy to be here (albeit late), Maggie & Charles here, sad to miss party; Nick happy for party and happy Rick's prez; Earl happy about how well the weekend went (including Sat.); Tony happy to be in audience instead of at head table, happy re party, congratulations to Rick, happy Builders Club officers here; Dano happy re splitting between Hermosa & Lomita Kiwanis; Larry M sad not invited to Installation, happy no longer Lt.Gov, happy for Rick as president; Joe happy re fantastic design of party, happy for Tony's service as President, sad re theft of bell & gavel; Sam happy re beautiful day, feeling good, among friends & great party; Terry happy re party, gorgeous decorations ("can't believe the gym looked so good!"), happy Rick president, sad Tony's sitting in the back, happy re Builders here and 70 Key Clubbers at first meeting; Charlie happy $25 re retiring after 25 years of government civil service; Cathy happy re awesome first Builders meeting (70 present), sad re first day as Secretary (dues go to her), happy re going to Hawaii next week for 25th Anniversary (with Dick & Shea), sad Shea laid off; Bob happy re great party, sad re some members petering out at 3:00 a.m.; Carol sad to miss party, happy re awards, happy re volleyball victory; Cary happy re Saturday festivities, new look for the hall, sad missed Tony Molino's installation; Greg happy his friends didn't embarrass him in front of his parents and parents didn't embarrass him in front of his friends; Rick thanked Tony for great year and paving the way for him, sorry Larry M's dog ate his invitation, happy Rick's mom was responsible for decorations -- Mom's smile made it all worth while -- thanks to all who helped.

AUCTION:  Cathy donated a certificate to any two  Civic Light Opera Shows - Howieee "won" the auction for $80 - Thanks Cathy & Howiee!

 

RAFFLE: Prez Rick had the winning ticket but drew the Jack of Hearts. Daily was $40, pot was $230 with 10 cards left.  FINK:  Next week is #229996.
