PROGRAM: Speaker
Evelyn Berg Empie, author of the book “A Child in the Midst of
Battle”, told us about her terrifying experiences in Manila, the Philippines,
during the Japanese bombing and occupation in WWII. Manila was bombed the same day as Pearl Harbor and was occupied
by the Japanese on Jan 2nd 1942. Her vivid memories of being at a
Communion birthday party when the news came of the attack, sent chills thru
the crowd. Then, she and family were under the table at home when the bombs
started. Her father cried knowing the
US forces could not stop the Japanese from invading. Her tales of the
Japanese taking cars, radios, etc., the lack of food, and the danger of being
threatened every moment, were disturbing for all of us. On the lighter side, Evelyn talked about
eating canned peaches and “cream”- her favorite food. She felt no one else
ate peaches that way, well, it was common in the South (& in CA) for your
editor! The final battle of Manila left over 180,000 civilians dead. GET HER BOOK!!!! |
