PROGRAM:.Greg Pearl, OD (Optometrist) was our speaker today. He works with an organization called VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) which distributes glasses to needy people where vision care is not available. There are VOSH chapters in every state in the US and in 10 countries. Most of their work is in Mexico, Central and South America. The optometrists and optometry students volunteer their time and pay their own expenses. They collect old glasses through service groups, civic organizations, optometric offices, etc., sort them, then ship them where they are needed. They are trying to establish more optometry schools and optometry clinics in these areas. When people can't see to read, their education and their productivity suffers. They did a project with our Sister Cities Organization in Loreto and provided about 200 children with new prescription glasses made specifically for each child. If you have old glasses to contribute, bring them to the Kiwanis Hall and we will get them to VOSH or you can contact Dr. Pearl at 372-0260. |
