PROGRAM: Carmen Apelgren, Community Relations specialist at the Braille Institute gave an inspiring talk re the capabilities of vision impaired people and the services provided by the Braille Institute. Born with retinitis pigmentosis, she started life full of energy and while somewhat sighted had a great career as a singer, dancer, director, actress in little theatre. Now she is technical advisor to Hollywood, teaching tv/movie people how to portray realistically the visually impaired. She also teaches the blind to dance. The Braille Institute teaches clients to experience the joys of life, including many classes, an extensive library, talking books, Braille publications (especially kids books). They try to instill a "yes, I can" attitude and support equipment purchases for employer who hire their clients. |
