SPEAKER: John Hales - Hermosa Beach Historical Society Historian passed along some interesting facts about the history of Hermosa. John has now inherited the historian's job from Pat Gazin. He's been reviewing old newspapers and other sources in great detail. He chronicled some of the City's history from 1888 when Santa Fe railroad built tracks to Redondo Harbor, 1901 initial town survey, 1903 first post office, 1907 city incorporated, 1904 first pier, 1914 second pier, 1965 concrete pier, 1926 Surf & Sand Club which became the Biltmore and is now Noble Park, 1926 Hermosa Kiwanis chartered. He also amused us with stories such as post office robberies ($200 in 1914), runaway barges on the beach (1916), earthquakes (1918), strange and wonderful bathing suit ordinances (1922) and the origin of the noon siren (1923). |
