THE KIWANIAN

Bulletin of the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club

December 3, 2003

Carol Lawson, Editor – Howard Seeb, Photographer

STARTERS: Prez Rick Koenig opened the 3891st meeting.  We sang without leadership.   Alicia Costa was here after a long absence so she led the pledge and Merle prayed.

GUESTS: We inducted all of our guests today (see below), but Rick Borders snuck in late.  His introduction was deferred.  Hopefully we will induct him soon too.

BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES:  The only reason Alicia showed up today was that her birthday was yesterday and she just had to have the Kiwanians sing Happy Birthday in their very most obnoxious style.  Happy Birthday, Alicia.  Good to see you today.!!

DRINK DISPENSER/FINK/OTHER FINES:

Whit caught Carol and some others, but it was so noisy I couldn't tell who else he nabbed.  Fink Dick McCurdy took the chicken way out and asked for volunteers.  I think he got a bunch.

Keith Watts and Mike Miller, both sponsored by Bob McEachen, made us feel really old saying they graduated from college in 1997 (USC).  All of our new inductees have signed up to work numerous shifts at the tree lot.  It's great to have some new young blood in the club!!.

THE GROUP:                               HAPPY B'DAY ALICIA!

PROGRAM:  U.S. Air Force Lt. David Miller told us about the Air Force Space and Missile System Center (at Aviation & El Segundo).  They acquire and provide satellites for GPS, military communication satellites, etc.  They also have Space Based Infrared Systems that let us know if a missile is launched at us.  He works in international affairs helping to get other countries to work the US.  He described Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg AFB as "National Treasures" because we can launch missiles or whatever without passing over land.  As good as they get they are never without risk.  The Aerospace Corp. is an affiliated group that is a non-profit technical arm, that does R&D and maintains continuity because USAF personnel moves on.

HAPPY/SADS: Cathy happy her son is employed as a TSA, happy re gorgeous Kiwanis tree in Lily Pad window; Mike happy re being a new member and working the tree lot; Joe happy re so many new members; Keith happy to join Kiwanis and the return customers at the tree lot; Larry sad re "new" rules on fines; Howiee happy re orientation of new members and departure of 1-1/2 year houseguest; Sam happy re new Kiwanis sign at Valley Park; Carol happy re new members working the tree lot; Pat happy re Pete Tucker's swearing in and seeing him in a suit (yes, she had a picture); Greg happy re new members in his age group and mystery dollar (didn't want to jinx "it"); Jerry and Rick both happy re new members; Yvonne happy re new tree lot capable members, thanks to Carol & Terry for sign-up chores and happy re goodies brought to lot by customers.
