PROGRAM: Speakers today were Diane Saign and Maggie Leibert, volunteers with the American Cancer Society. They showed a moving video about the Beach Cities Relay for Life event on July 19-20 at Aviation Park in Redondo Beach. Teams made up of 10-15 people walk or run around a track in shifts. There is a camp-out, entertainment and refreshments. The event raised nearly $100,000 last year and hopes to do better this year. The money all goes for research, education and programs for cancer patients, survivors and their families. They need participants, sponsors, volunteers for helping to plan the event and event day volunteers. In addition to raising funds, the event honors cancer survivors who are encouraged to walk the opening lap. Luminarias (candles for a ceremony at the event) can be purchased to honor a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who has lost his or her battle with cancer ($15). For more info you can contact Christine Hollander, our cancer survivor who is walking the walk, or Tracey Mayer at the ACS (310) 348-0356 option 3/ext.246 or tracey.mayer@cancer.org. |
