STARTERS:  The Boys Choir began with a splendid rendition of Gold Bless America (loud enough to hear in Iraq), Past Lt.Gov. Dick McCurdy led the pledge and Dr. Merle gave the invocation.

GUESTS:  Our only visitor today was Bob Crowley's long time military buddy, Fred Drake. BIRTHDAYS: Doug Jenkins finally showed for a meeting so we made him endure the birthday song for his March 11th birthday.

TOTAL K DAY was a big success thanks to Chairman Rick Hankus and co-chairs Terry and Howiee.  We had 22 members, 12 Builders Clubbers, 6 Key Clubbers, 3 Circle K'ers and several other guests.  Great pancake breakfast (thanks to the Tonys Lombardo in the kitchen) and planted around 600 bulbs and plants in the greenbelt.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE:  Thanks to the contributions and drink donations of the guests at Joe's party, after paying for everything for the party, the sum of $250 was donated to our International Relations Committee in Joe's name.

JOE thanked "Queenie" McCurdy for putting on a terrific 90th Birthday Party for Joe.  He was also sporting a beautiful new gold Kiwanis watch.

PROGRAM: Kenneth Trevett, President/CEO of the Research & Education Institute (REI) at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Eileen Moseley, Director of Public Relations were introduced by Vice President Greg Wyatt.  The REI has been around for about 50 years.  It is an affiliate of the hospital and UCLA. They do biomedical research in the areas of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, infectious diseases, vaccine research, autoimmune disorders, and other areas.  In the late 1960's they created and implemented the nations first paramedic training program.  With a budget of approximately $60 million annually, they are working on many new projects including treatment for infectious diseases (have to constantly look for the next generation of antibiotics),  vaccines, electron beam temography screening which may replace coronary angiography, and other projects.  Their research is often a technology generator and they are working to increase the presence of biomedical, biotech and pharmaceutical companies in the South Bay.
