SPEAKER:  Mr. Earl Feys, world famous China expert gave a program about the new dam being built on the Yangtze River.  He recently vistited Northeast and Central China and spent 8 days on the Yangtze.  The Yantze is one of 4 main rivers across China flowing from the Tibeten plateau and the 3rd largest in the world.  Flooding has been a serious problem, killing hundreds of thousands of people.  Silt is also a problem.  They have built one dam and are in the process of building a second in the 3 gorges area.  It is due to be completed in 2009.  They will have to move 11 county seats, 116 towns and nearly 200,000 people.  Farmland and coal mines also will be under water.  The new dam will facilitate transportation, generate electricity (eventually 1/4 of China's electricity) and control the flooding.  Great program, Earl!!
