Joshua is a Captain with the Salvation Army and has been with them for about six years. He's originally from Massachusetts, but wound up in California via the U.S. Marine Corp. His wife, Jessica, was apparently the moving force in getting him to check out Kiwanis (she was a member of Builders and Key Club). |

SPEAKER: Carlos O'Brien was studying the
anthropological aspects of Oaxaca, Mexico and particularly the health of the indigenous
Mixteco people. He spent 5-1/2 weeks
in the village of San Juan Numi. Many Mixteco (about 15% of the population or
50,000 folks) live in California and work in agriculture. Through an organization called Direct
Relief International he is going back in December to help provide additional
medical supplies. The rural areas of
Oaxaca are fair distances from hospitals and have little in the way of
emergency equipment or medical supplies.
They still use their traditional medical including herbal remedies. |
