SPEAKER: Do you know where the money goes when you put it in those red kettles? Member Joshua Sneed told us all about it. The Salvation Army was started in 1865 in London. It was started by William Booth preaching the gospel to the down and out in the slums. Because these new believers weren't welcome in established churches then, he started his own church which later became the Salvation Army. It expanded to the US in 1880 and now serves the needy in over 100 countries. Although there is an evangelical component to the organization, their goal is to end human suffering. All kettle proceeds go directly to services for people who need it, without any discrimination. They operate homeless and transitional shelters, group homes, programs to help alcohol and drug addicts, programs for the disabled, to combat child abuse, to assist the elderly and runaways. They provide food, clothing and shelter to those in need. |
