STARTERS: Prez Rick opened the 3914th meeting, Dano and Doris led us in an amazingly competent Star Spangled Banner, Nick led the pledge and Earl gave the blessing. GUESTS: Scott Bilowit brought his lovely daughter Sara and Prez Rick brought Linda Hopkins. Joni Ackerman, our newest member, was here with her apron today (but without Greg!). BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES:
Scott called his dad on his cell phone so we could sing Happy Birthday for his 85th birthday last Saturday. Seymour Bilowit has been a long time member of Kiwanis, is a Past President, but now lives out in the desert. We also sang for Joanne Kenoff (5/25) and Dano Miller (5/27) bithdays. DRINK DISPENSER/FINK/OTHER FINES: The drink dispenser caught Cary and Greg Wyatt. Fink Cary tried to catch Dick, Joel and others, but because Cary arrived late himself he had to pay. SPEAKER NEXT WEEK
(5/26): Surprise! MISSING
POP-UP: Once there were three, now
there are two. Do you know where the
other pop-up is?? Call the Prez if
you know where it might be. |

MEDICAL UPDATES: Marjorie Fish: Sad to report that Marjorie is in the hospital
dealing with a new bout of cancer.
She’s expected to have surgery today. Jerry Compton: The latest report we had was that Jerry was
expected to get out of the hospital on Monday. Let’s check up on him, guys.
This does sound encouraging, however. Ann Ullman sent thanks
for her Teddy Bear (named Princess KB (Kiwanis Bear)), who appeared in person
to collect hugs for Ann. She hopes to be back soon. JOEL GEFFEN: In light
of all the Kiwanis ailments lately, Joel generously offered “guest”
screenings. His firm screens areas
like thyroid, arteries, liver, kidney, stroke dangers, etc. Call Joel (408-0608) for more
information. |
HERMOSA FIESTA: Memorial Day Weekend (5/29-31), we will be parking cars again at Hermosa Valley School. Proceeds will all go to the school. Be sure to get on the sign-up list for one or more shifts. MEMORIAL DAY SCROLL: Be sure to stop by the Information Booth at the Fiesta to send a message to our service men and women from Hermosa Beach. CIRCLE K BANQUET: Sam reported that the Circle K banquet was a great success. Terry came to help out and even returned to help clean up after taking home her Key Clubbers who wanted to socialize with the college kids. KEY CLUB BANQUET: Terry reported that the Key Club banquet was also a big success. Key and Carol got to witness her receipt of 30 bottles of 2-buck Chuck and the love and appreciations of her Key Clubbers. |

PROGRAM: Our ever-entertaining
Program Chair Greg Wyatt introduced today’s program, Doug Juola, who is a certified stage hypnotist and
hypnotherapist. Doug described
hypnosis as a natural state of mind, like just before you go to sleep or just
before you wake up. It is not sleep,
but makes you susceptible to suggestions to your subconscious mind. You generally will not do anything under
hypnosis that is contrary to your morals or beliefs, although you may do
things that look very silly if you participate in the stage hypnosis
performances. After some talk about
what hypnosis is and isn’t, we saw a brief film of the stage-type hypnosis. It was very funny. Doug appeared to be quite competent and
knowledgeable in the area. He has
been interested in it since he was a boy and has been working with it for
over 25 years. If you’re interested in
the serious Hypnotherapist or the Comedy Hypnotist aspects of his work his
website is www.ochypnotist.com and his telephone is (949) 770-9101. NO PHOTOS TODAY: Howieeeee is off pedaling around Nantucket Island and Martha’s Vineyard this
week (probably hobnobbing with the East Coast gentry) so you’re left with
your editor just babbling on to fill up the space. SCHOLARSHIPS: Cathy reported that we will be giving $9,500 in
direct Kiwanis Scholarships and $35,000 of anonymous donor scholarships. Way to go Kiwanians!! |
HAPPY/SADS: Nick happy that he is now a married man and they had a wonderful honeymoon trip to Italy; Whit just happy! Cathy happy for a great week in Puerto Vallarta with Dick (she even paid a happy dollar for Dick too) and happy for 3 months of not smoking. Also sad/happy that their non-confrontational, punk rocker son Shea (who is now working as a TSA agent) is applying for jobs as a policeman. Oh dear! Scott happy for dad’s birthday and for daughter Sara here. Pat happy Sara here and happy that Deb, Cathy and Dick came back from their respective vacations. Also a “keep her in your thoughts”dollar for Corinne. Linda happy for birthday lunch with Joanne. Sam happy they had a successful Circle K banquet last weekend. Today’s thought: “Did you ever wonder why sun lightens our hair but darkens our skin?” Terry happy that she received a thank you gift from her Key Clubbers for 30 bottles of “two buck Chuck”. Bob happy daughter Katie home for a week so he doesn’t have to put money in her checking account – he can just hand it to her. Also happy Terry and Carol have practice “cleaning up the place” so they can come over and help out Judi. Linda Hopkins happy she has the best landlord (Bob McE) and best boyfriend (Rick K). Cary happy/sad that he is moving his business to the corner of Knob Hill and PCH in Redondo – 4000 sq. ft. – nice space. He has outgrown his 200 Pier offices and the property may be redeveloped soon anyway. Greg W happy that his great grand stepmother is recovering nicely after a heart attack. Also happy/sad that his brother wants to return home from Seattle, but may wind up living with Greg instead of parents. Rick K happy to see Scotty back, Nick back. Sorry he will miss parking lot duty this weekend because he’s going white water rafting on the South Kern this weekend – 18 miles of class 5 rapids!! (Hope to see you back next week, Rick). Speaker Doug happy to be here today. |
