MEDICAL UPDATES: Jerry Compton is at
Little Company of Mary Hospital suffering from multiple blood clots. Reports from Earl, Carol & Judi varied
as to his exact condition, but apparently the clots were brought on by the
chemo he had been undergoing. Some of
the clots have been dissolved, but he’s still in ICU. Keep him in your thoughts and
prayers. Get better, Jerry!!! The Club authorized the
purchase of $5 worth of raffle tickets by Brad Baker for Jerry Compton even
though neither was present.
Unfortunately for both of them, Carla won the pot. Ann Ullman successfully
completed her radiation therapy and her cancer seems manageable, but the
radiation resulted in painful hairline fractures in her pelvis which can only
be cured by time and rest. Keep her
in your thoughts and prayers, too. |
HERMOSA FIESTA: Memorial Day Weekend (5/29-31), we will be parking cars again at Hermosa Valley School. Proceeds will all go to the school. Be sure to get on the sign-up list for one or more shifts. CONGRESSIONAL ART AWARDS: Rick emceed the event last Saturday and awards were given out. The art was exceptional. It will continue to be on display for a little while at the Manhattan Cultural Arts Center. Stop by. HERMOSA VALLEY BUILDERS CLUB: Rick attended their meeting this week (filling in for Cathy McCurdy, who is in Puerto Vallarta with Dick) and was impressed with the decorum and business-like manner in which they conducted elections for next year’s officers. MEMORIAL DAY SCROLL: Linda Hopkins, together with Union Bank, Whole Foods and others will have a scroll at the Veterans Booth at the fair on which fairgoers can send greetings to our service people serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places around the world. |

INDUCTION of JONI ACKERMAN: Today we inducted Joni Ackerman, sponsored by fiancé Greg
Ronkainen. Joni is originally from
Ohio but has been in California for about 20 years. She is an attorney practicing in Hermosa Beach. She is a Certified Specialist in Estate
Planning and Probate, which means she is an expert in preparing estate plans
including wills, trusts and the like and she does probate litigation like
will contests and other disputes in this area. So now we have two estate planners in the club (Brad Baker also
practices in this area). There is no
excuse now not to have your estate plans in order. Sam and Earl handled
the formalities for the induction, presenting Joni with her apron,
certificate, and Objects of Kiwanis.
Sponsor Greg got to give the pin. Welcome, Joni!!!! Today’s Speaker:
PROGRAM: Our speaker today was Andor Gyulai (“Andor rhymes with “condor” and “Gyulai” is pronounced “July”). His name is Hungarian (he claims to be a descendant of Attila the Hun), he hails from South Africa, went to UCLA where he played volleyball, and now has a rugby camp. By profession, he is a stock broker/financial planner who works in Beverly Hills. His topic today was “How to Understand and Predict Interest Rates”. He spoke about the inter-relationship between inflation, productivity and interest rates, both historically and now. I’m not even going to try to explain it, but he was interesting and informative. |
HAPPY/SADS: Greg R. happy that Joni is now a member of Kiwanis and happy his son is 4 years cancer free. Sad that Jerry, Ann, Jim, others are struggling with cancer problems. Howiee sad for today’s raffle losers, happy that he will be gone next week on a bicycle trip to Nantucket Island and Martha’s vineyards. Whit sad that Jerry is ailing, but otherwise happy. Dallas sad re Jeannie Cramer’s broken foot keeping her on crutches while she is trying to start a new business. He was also happy that Pat waxed the hall floor last night. Looks great! Terry happy re Joni a new member, happy Deb’s going to Puerto Rico tonight. Merle sad Jerry’s ailing – When Merle was President, Jerry chaired a membership drive and brought in 12 new members. Sam happy for Joni, sad for Jerry, happy/sad that Circle K officers went to Redondo Union to meet with Key Clubbers, but wound up at a different location from where the Key Club was meeting – they will try again. Comment for the day: “Only in America do we put cars worth thousands of dollars on the driveway and useless junk in the garage. Deb happy re trip to Puerto Rico, sad re Jerry, Ann, Corinne. Len sad re Jerry, happy re RB approval for his new restaurant. Maria happy she has a new vacation place in Florida. Pat sad her ticket stubs didn’t make it into the drawing. Greg R sad that at orientation for Joni Earl kept asking for more change until he got a free breakfast (shades of Laughlin trips??). Earl happy that he now has more influence around here. Carol happy that daughter Angie engaged to great guy who actually has a job! Rick happy re Joni a new member, sad for Jerry and Ann. The Lucky Money Lady: |
