STARTERS: Prez Rick opened the 3915th meeting, Doris led us in the Star Spangled America and Sam led the pledge. Dick McC asked for prayers for our ailing friends and members, Jerry, Ann, Marjorie, Jim, Anna, Larry, and Corinne and gave the invocation.

GUESTS: Jack Belasco brought his lovely wife Pat Woolley.  (They were also seen dancing to Doris’ pre-meeting music.)

BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES: None today.

DRINK DISPENSER/FINK/OTHER FINES: The drink dispenser just caught Len.  Then fabulous fink Dallas caught Len, Colleen, Joel and Whit.  Dallas was glad that the drink dispenser’s memory was so bad he forgot Dallas didn’t shake his hand.  The prez also fined Len and Greg for not wearing proper badges.

SPEAKER NEXT WEEK (6/9):  Only Greg knows for sure.

THANKS:  We received nice thank-you notes from Children’s Miracle Network and the Dig for Kids Foundation (Volleyball program).

MEDICAL UPDATES:

Marjorie Fish:  Merle reports her surgery went well, but she is still in intensive care at Torrance Memorial.  Hopefully she will be moved to a regular room soon, but he expects her to be in the hospital for several weeks.

Jerry Compton:  Rick reported that Jerry is home and his spirits are good.  To help with the blood clots he had a filter installed under his skin (sort of like a pacemaker).

HB City Councilman Pete Tucker’s dad was killed in a small plane crash in Northern California over the weekend.  Sadly, a CHP officer was also killed in a traffic accident on his way to the plane crash.

HERMOSA FIESTA:  Cathy reported that the car parking fundraiser was a great success.  We raised $4,968.00 for the Hermosa Beach School District.  Thanks for the great help and ingenious parking efforts from Rick, Joel, Terry, Fred, Carol, Pat, Paul, Yvonne, Mike, Earl, Alice, Nick, Joanne, Sam, Dick, Cathy (did I miss someone??).

GOVERNOR’S VISIT:  Last Thursday’s Governors Visit at the Renaissance Hotel was attended by Carol, Dr. Barr, Pat and Chris Love.  This qualified for an interclub with LAX and earned us a banner patch.  Pat won the $290 50/50 raffle and took home the frog.

INTERCLUBS:  Yvonne reported a great interclub last week with Rolling Hills (met at Red Onion).  Speaker was a 111 year old woman who had a book published when she was 99.  Very interesting program.  Next interclub probably 6/17 at LAX.

PROGRAM: Greg introduced our speaker today, ANGIE HEYMING, from Hermosa Beach Friends of the Park.  June marks the one year anniversary of this organization.  It is fully registered as a not for profit organization to raise funds for improvements to the Hermosa Beach Parks.  They have had several successful fundraisers and have developed ideas for several park improvement projects.  Their biggest current goal is to refurbish Fort Lots of Fun at the corner of 6th and Prospect.  This will cost nearly $100,000 according to current estimates.  This park is currently run down and has out of date play equipment.  The City has indicated it will assist with matching funds.  They have already started working on the small park at 4th and Prospect, cleaning weeds, planting, etc. with the help of volunteers and contributions.

Friends of the Park is currently made up of several Parks and Recs Commissioners and several citizens.  They are seeking additional volunteer members.  You will immediately get a title and a job if you volunteer now.  They meet on the second Wednesday of each month in Room 4 of the Community Center at 6:00 p.m.  Anyone and everyone are welcome to attend.  Angie promises the meetings only last an hour.

This Saturday, June 5, from 10:45 to 1:00 at Valley Park they will be grilling hotdogs.  This is the City’s Summer Celebration event for parents to sign their kids up for the summer programs and for residents to get together at the park.  If you can help with the grilling or otherwise volunteer to help, call Angie at 310/704-3603.

HAPPY/SADS:

Pat happy she won the money at the Governor’s Visit, sad for Pete’s dad, happy everyone here today.

Whit just happy!!

Cary happy his daughter Megan was selected as one of the artists for the surf board art contest.

Cathy happy the club raised so much money for the school district.

Sam happy his Circle K guys showed up to park cars.  Since Terry wasn’t here, his quote was for Greg:  “Avoiding temptation gets a lot easier as you get older.  Temptation starts avoiding you.”

Howie happy to be back from his bike trip in New England (which he reminded us is in fact part of the U.S.A. and a very beautiful place).  After his bike trip he went to Toronto for a family wedding and was happy to have survived that as well.

Pat Woolley happy to see their new granddaughter in Hawaii and that her two grandsons are arriving here soon.

Bob happy that Katie’s back at school so he can resume putting money in her account instead of just handing it to her.  He was sad about the quality of the “come to order” bell today (the Prez banged on the lid of one of the caterer’s serving dishes).

Merle happy that Marjorie got through her surgery last week and is recuperating in intensive care at Torrance Memorial.  Sad that she is likely to be in the hospital for 4 to 6 weeks.

Mike happy that Marjorie is on the mend.

Joel hopes Marjorie has a speedy recovery.

Rick happy we raised so much money for the school, happy our ailing members are improving, happy to have survived his river rafting trip.  He said it was 18 miles of Class 5 rapids and that Kelly Wigglesworth (of “Survivor” fame) was one of their guides.

                 The money lady:

RAFFLE: Winning the 50/50 at the Governor’s Visit wasn’t enough.  Pat Love had the winning ticket today and took the $33 daily cash.  The pot for the joker was $106 with 15 cards.

NEXT FINK:  #648
