THE KIWANIAN

Bulletin of the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club

STARTERS: Prez Rick opened the 3,896th meeting, we all sang God Bless America, Rick Hankus led the pledge and Merle prayed.

GUESTS:  No guests today other than our speaker.  We were even short of members because Colleen, Sam, Paul and Keith were interclubbing with the Lawndale Kiwanis Club.  Jane did bring Winston, however.

BIRTHDAYS/ANNIVERSARIES:  We sang again for Linda Haxton (2/21) and Terry (1/27).

DRINK DISPENSER/FINK/OTHER FINES:

Whit only caught Bruce (who came in late) and super friendly fink Pat Love shook every hand in the house.

WELCOME BACK!  It was great to see Bud Murry back today after being among the missing for a while. Len Kissel was also back, but he seems to have left a bunch of pounds someplace else.

AILING KIWANIANS:  Dorothy stopped by to say that Dallas is in Torrance Memorial Hospital for what was originally thought to be a kidney problem (but didn't turn out to be).  She thinks he should be coming home soon though.   Rumor also has it that Joe took a spill last weekend and Claude could be feeling better.  We still miss our friend Jim and Ann turned up missing again today.  Lets keep in touch and keep all of them in your thoughts!  Please feel better all of you!

KEY CLUB NEWS:  Key Club Prez Dena stopped by to invite Kiwanians to join Key Clubbers and Builders Clubbers in their feed the homeless program on 2/11.  A sign-up was passed around.  (3:00-5:00 to help prepare food, 5:00-7:00 to help serve food).  Let's get a good turnout on this.  This is a great opportunity to get to know our sponsored youth and be inspired by their hard work.

SUPER BOWL PARTY:    Sunday, February 1 at the Kiwanis Hall.  Party starts at 1:30, kick-off at 3:00.  Come around 12:00 if you can help decorate.  It's pot-luck and bring your own lawn chairs.  Friends and family are invited.

MISC. ANNOUNCEMENTS:  We received our banner patch for completing an Interclub Round Robin last year (nice work, Sam).  Prez Rick passed around the program from the Sister Cities Convention that took place in mid-January and we had a full page ad on the back cover.

PROGRAM:  Speaker Monte Whaley, friend of Greg and Rick's and great comedian entertained us today.  Kiwanians all remember him from Rick's inauguration.  Perhaps because Greg tried to disclaim all responsibility for the content of today's program, he and Rick found themselves the butt of several of Monte's jokes.  We were treated to a Kiwanis version of Karnak the Magnificent (fortunately we're all old enough to remember Johnny Carson) and a review of Presidential politics from JFK to George W.  I could have sworn all of those old presidents were at our meeting.  Great show, Monte!!

HAPPY/SADS: Cathy had a happy/sad? story about Shea's trip to Arizona and his car breaking down near Hooters (he's still in Arizona); Cary happy he'll be celebrating 20 years of marriage to Kathy by going to Bora Bora for a week, also happy he's going to China in April; Bruce happy that Shea's parents can believe his car actually broke down at Hooters; Whit was just happy; Pat sad she's going to dentist tomorrow, but happy her granddaughter is in the Cheerleading competition in Las Vegas next week and Pat is going to cheer her on; Greg sad re bronchitis, but happy re miracles of modern medicine, and very happy his girlfriend is training to be a nurse; Earl sad that he had to donate a dollar; Carol happy re Earl's beads, skinny Len and new carpet; Rick sad he missed last week's meeting but happy he has a new work project.

RAFFLE: Speaker Monte had the winning ticket and took home the daily $40.  ("Hey, I actually get paid for this gig.")  The pot was $280 with 17 cards left. FINK NEXT WEEK:  #125354
