PROGRAM: Ken Prush, Director,
Manhattan Beach Parks & Recreation
Dept., spoke to us about “Local Partnerships in Recreation and the Arts”. It
would seem art & recreation play a small role in the day-to-day
activities of a city, but in fact, among the top reasons people give for
moving to a new city almost always include the “character”of the town. We complain about parking, parking,
parking, and the difficulty of getting into Sangria on Friday night, but arts
& recreation truly improve our quality of life. Arts & recreation serve
as a barometer of a city’s affluence. Surprisingly, San Jose has the highest
percentage of theatre attendance. Small activities can bring economic
benefits to communities without the bad effects of large events. Art & recreation are fundamental to
our existence. The passions we establish in our youth stay with us all our
lives. It’s more than icing, it’s a
fundemental ingredient in the batter.
